Located between the islands of Komodo and Lombok, Sumbawa Island is situated in the heart of the Ring of Fire. The terrain of Sumbawa Island is diverse, with towering active volcanoes, dense forest mountains, and dry savanna lowlands, surrounded by a rich underwater world. It has many prominent and twisted peninsulas, which form many sheltered bays for the islands scattered on the north shore.
The remote island at the western end of Sumbawa Island has picturesque white-sand beaches and turquoise oceans. The diverse and protected havens provide clear waters, deep and vibrant walls, steaming underwater volcanic vents, fertile breeding grounds, and conditions perfect for excellent muck diving opportunities.
Diving in Sumbawa has a shoal of countless triggerfish and butterflyfish, macro sightings of blue-ringed octopus, clown frogfish and nudibranchs, countless reef sharks, and deep-walled tuna. Apart from the spectacular underwater tapestry that surrounds Sumbawa Island are the visual attractions of volcanoes and enormous bat colonies that are a sight to behold. Often overlooked as a dive destination, Sumbawa can yield an abundance of marine life and pristine coral reefs.
